About our Programme

Our Apprentice Mechanic programme is a great opportunity for anyone who has an interest in vehicle maintenance.

This is a 4-year fixed term programme, working 37 hours per week. Over the four years, you will work within our transport division learning all aspects of the role, and also attend college to gain a IMI Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles qualification.

At Tayside Contracts we have a diverse fleet of vehicles and plant, therefore the apprenticeship programme will provide you with exposure to build a broad range of skills.

You do not have to have previous knowledge or experience to apply for this post. However, you should have:

  • An interest in pursuing a career in vehicle maintenance
  • A willingness to undertake a 4-year course, study and regularly attend college
  • An awareness of Health & Safety
  • National 5 (or equivalent) English and Maths
  • The ability to study for and pass all Modern Apprenticeship exams and to achieve the necessary Core Skills and Vocational Qualifications within the set training schedule
  • A Category B Driving Licence or commitment to work towards obtaining Category B Driving Licence. (expected to obtain within 12 months of either commencing employment or the age of 17, whichever comes first). Please note that this is not funded by Tayside Contracts  

Locations

We operate across Tayside and have depots in Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross. For our 2023 Apprentice Mechanic intake, you can complete your apprenticeship at the following locations:

  • 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝘂𝘀: Peasiehill Workshop (Arbroath)
  • 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗵 & 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀: Perth Workshop, Blairgowrie Workshop

Studying at College

As part of your apprenticeship programme, you will attend block release at Edinburgh College. This is typically 8 x 1 week blocks throughout the academic year. The college programme involves both practical and written exams. You will build up a portfolio of your work within the workshop which will be required to be submitted as part of your programme. On completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will gain an IMI Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

Travel/expenses will be covered as part of the apprentice programme.

Salary Information

We offer a competitive salary, which as an apprentice is a % (based on your age) of a standard Mechanic salary currently £28,013.23 *a pay award is also pending
