Dining al fresco at Perth High's Snack Shack
The latest addition to Perth High School's catering facilities is supporting a new approach in the way young people choose to eat when at school.
The 'Snack Shack' was established after consultation with pupils which showed they would prefer not to queue for too long, enjoyed getting out in the fresh air at break times, and wanted to 'grab and go' rather than having a sit down lunch some days.

Daily the new facility, named by pupils, will provide an inviting and good quality service in the school grounds at break times and lunch. A range of food will be on offer including baguettes, soups and salads together with a variety of hot and cold drinks, all to offer a nutritious dining experience. The Snack Shack is operated by the on-site team from Tayside Contracts led by Paul Gillen who thinks the facility is “a great way to attract the kids and provides a quality food option without having to go down the street."
School meals take-up in Perth and Kinross is continually increasing because of the support from both school and catering staff alike. Work is ongoing to improve the service available, develop new products and build links with pupils to ensure what is provided is both appropriate and enjoyable.
Perth High Headteacher Jim Scott commented: "The Snack Shack has provided a new dimension to the mix of food services offered to our pupils. I’m delighted that we are able to offer another improved service to our pupils - and staff.”
Lifelong Learning Vice-Convener Councillor Bob Band added: ”I am very encouraged that the pupils' voice has influenced this latest addition to our schools’ food facilities. I’m sure they will relish this outdoor option and I look forward to seeing more of these in the future.”
